City Of Troy to Skip Irish Derby

Derby winner City Of Troy will skip the Irish Derby at the Curragh later this month and instead compete in the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse on July 6, adding excitement to Sandown's summer event.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien, City Of Troy shone at Epsom after a disappointing 2,000 Guineas, securing Classic victory. The team debated between the Irish Derby and Sandown for his next race, with a potential dirt campaign later this year.

On Sunday, it was announced that Coolmore’s 2023 champion juvenile will shorten the distance to a mile and a quarter, following his Derby triumph earlier this month.

O’Brien commented, "City Of Troy has been in great form since Epsom. We’re heading to Sandown for the Eclipse. He impressed us at Epsom and continues to do well at home. Everything has been smooth."

He added, "He has plenty of speed, so the ten-furlong distance at Sandown won't be an issue. We’re excited to see him race there."

Meanwhile, Los Angeles, who placed third behind City Of Troy at Epsom, will aim for the Irish Derby on June 30, attempting to follow his sire Camelot’s footsteps. He is currently a 5-4 favorite with Paddy Power for the Curragh race.

O'Brien noted, "Los Angeles ran a strong race at Epsom and has improved since. We believe the Irish Derby suits him."

City Of Troy is an even-money favorite (from 6-4) for next month's Coral-Eclipse, and David Stevens of Coral remarked, "It's fantastic news that this season's Derby winner will race in the Coral-Eclipse. City Of Troy will likely be the hot favorite at Sandown, aiming to become the first Derby winner since Golden Horn to win this prestigious race."

Additionally, Coolmore's website updates revealed that Auguste Rodin, last year’s Derby winner, is set for the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he is the 6-4 favorite despite a recent defeat. Coolmore also announced that Sierra Leone, runner-up in the Kentucky Derby and third in the Belmont Stakes, will target the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga on August 24.

This race is also a potential target for City Of Troy, whose unbeaten streak ended with a ninth-place finish in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket last month. Prior to this, City Of Troy had notable victories at the Curragh, in the Group 2 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket, and the Dewhurst Stakes in October.
