On April 14th, 2024, the Maryland Jockey Club received concerning reports regarding a horse displaying neurological issues in its hind limbs. Despite lacking a fever at the time and remaining fever-free since, precautionary measures were swiftly taken. The affected horse, along with another in close proximity but symptom-free, were relocated to an isolation barn at Laurel Park. Furthermore, Barn 33, where the affected horse resided, was promptly placed under quarantine.
Thus immediately and promptly the State Veterinarian’s Office was alerted and the club arranged for the affected horse to undergo testing for Equine Herpesvirus (EHV). Confirmation came late yesterday that the initial nasal swab tested positive for EHV. Further testing is scheduled for later this week.
In collaboration with the State Veterinarian’s Office, Laurel Park are developing a comprehensive quarantine protocol for Barn 33. This protocol will allow horses in this barn to train separately while enabling other barns to continue their regular racing and training activities.
It is crucial that all horses under the care of the Authority are closely monitored for any signs of fever or symptoms consistent with EHV. Any horse showing a temperature above 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit or exhibiting signs of incoordination must be reported immediately to an MJC Veterinarian.
