Philasande Mxoli rode a beaut of a race to win a Cape A Stakes race that was highlighted by the presence of Princess Calla.
The Horse of the Year was drawn wide and that cost her along with an optimal ride from Mxoli as the Glen Kotzen trained runner, King Regent, showed his best form to run them into the ground over the 1250m trip at Durbanville.
The mare and the gelding ran at level weights even though King Regent is a 109 and Princess Calla rated a 127, and the odds discrepancy revealed that with the winner opening at 25/1 and backed into 16/1 whilst Princess Calla was 5/10.
With Tempting Fate leading initially and the front running grey After the Rain taking over after overcoming a wide draw, the top two in the finish found themselves in the second and third spots through the run. They fought all the way to the line with King Regent always getting the better of Princess Calla. The eye catcher was that of Rio Querari who ran on very well for third, in fact the fastest to finish. He was also 3kg worse off that the top two and has the bragging rights as having run the best race at the weights.
King Regent ran a full length (in terms of distance covered) less than Princess Calla primarily due to her wider draw and wider run to that of the 2 drawn King Regent. That lesser ground covered won King Regent the race and the jockey took advantage of that draw with a peach of a ride.
