From the moment I drove into Greyville Race Course and jumped out my vehicle I still couldn't shrug off my feeling of exhilaration and excitement as I watched the horses race past me on the poly track. Believe it or not the goosebumps were not the result of the icy cold wind that's atypical to September weather.
I was just in time to hear the punters shout out for Vallanaut which was a 12 to 1 winner. I think I already dodged the proverbial bullet as I would have definitely gone for the popular Marcus runner who was odds on. I was cursing the delay in the traffic on Argyle Road to get to the course but I seemed to have saved me a few rand with that delay. A great start to the evening, so I thought!
As I made my way to the VIP Members lounge as a guest of a member, it was fascinating watching all the different types of people attending the race meet. The aroma of hot chips being freshly fried and Boerrie rolls tantalized my taste buds not to forget the waft of freshly ground coffee and the classy surrounds of the Durban View Room and the Members Lounge.
As I walked past the elderly Indian "aunty" on my way to look at the horses I peaked at her frying the hot spicy Indian snack called Vedas I had a flashback to my childhood where I was taken back in time to my grandmas kitchen and my first taste of this classic savory snack.
After the viewing of horses in the Parade Ring I made my way through the crowds of punters and arrived back at my table. I was seated at a table facing the course which had a magnificent view of the finish post. With easy access to the betting facility what more could an avid punter like me ask for besides a tasty flavoursome meal.
Like most of the race course the menu is definitely somewhat archaic and English, not in keeping with the style expected of dining out in Durban, these days.
However the rumours of a new Sous Chef at the course has definitely got my attention. I definitely would recommend the vegetable pasta option which I ordered, a simple dish but done properly. However I would prefer better choices on the menu.
It's fascinating watching the excitement of the crowd from all walks of life spurring their selected horses on.Horse racing is a sport which brings all walks of people together and that excited me. I may even bring my friends along the next time.
Despite me leaving with an emptier wallet than that of which I had arrived, I had a fun filled entertaining evening.
So all in all if you want to spend a relaxing Friday having a good punt amidst good company.
Greyville Race Course Night Racing is the place to be on a relaxed Durban evening. If only more people came through to experience it .
