Lockinge Stakes Draws Deep International Cast as Newbury Showdown Takes Shape

The confirmed runners and riders for Saturday’s Lockinge Stakes underline the depth and intrigue surrounding the first major all-aged mile contest of the European flat season, with established Group 1 performers set to clash against emerging talent at Newbury Racecourse.

At the center of the field is Notable Speech, who will again be partnered by William Buick. The colt developed into one of Europe’s leading milers last season and arrives with the profile of a horse expected to anchor the division through the summer.

Aidan O’Brien relies on the much-discussed The Lion In Winter, with Ryan Moore taking the ride. The colt’s presence adds another layer of intrigue given the regard in which he has long been held within Ballydoyle circles, although this assignment represents a stern examination against hardened older horses.

The field also includes Dancing Gemini, partnered by Rossa Ryan, while the rapidly progressive Jonquil gets the services of Colin Keane in what could prove one of the more significant jockey bookings of the meeting.

French interest comes through Sahlan Mickael and Mickael Barzalona, while Damysus teams up with James Doyle for connections hoping to break into the elite miling ranks.

Elsewhere, Cicero's Gift reunites with Jason Watson, More Thunder will be ridden by Tom Marquand, and Mississippi River is partnered by Sean Levey.

Rounding out the line-up is Zeus Olympios, with Clifford Lee aboard.

The final field presents an interesting tactical mix. Proven Group 1 class sits alongside lightly raced upside, and with several runners likely to improve significantly from their seasonal reappearances, the Lockinge has the potential to become an early defining contest in Europe’s 2026 mile division.
