Seize The Day Emerges As Another Juvenile Star

There’s a rhythm to big operations when everything clicks—and right now, Te Akau Racing are moving to a beat few can match.

On Saturday at Trentham, their latest headline act arrived in emphatic fashion. Seize The Day, still very much learning his craft, turned the Group One Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) into a one-horse show, surging clear to underline both his raw talent and the stable’s uncanny eye at the sales.

It completed a clean sweep of New Zealand’s juvenile Group Ones this season for the “Tangerine Team,” with stablemate Lara Antipova having already stamped her authority in the Sistema Stakes earlier in the month. Both youngsters share a common thread—they were sourced from the famed Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, a marketplace that continues to fuel Te Akau’s dominance.

Sent off a solid $2.80 favorite, Seize The Day didn’t have things entirely his own way early. Drawn wide, rider Opie Bosson had to make a call. Rather than be trapped deep, he allowed the colt to roll forward, gradually working into position before unleashing him turning for home.

The response was instant and decisive.

Within a few strides, the race was over. Seize The Day lengthened with authority, his stride eating up ground as he powered away to win by four and a half lengths. Bosson had time to ease down late—always a sign you’re dealing with something above average.

Speaking afterward, the experienced jockey admitted the early stages required quick thinking, but once the colt settled, everything fell into place. Just as importantly, the decision to remove the blinkers appeared to unlock a more tractable version of the horse—one that relaxed, traveled, and then exploded when asked.

For co-trainer Sam Bergerson, the performance confirmed what the stable had long suspected.

Seize The Day had always shown promise, but like many big, scopey colts, he needed time for everything to click. Now that it has, the progression looks steep—and potentially very rewarding.

The win also continues a remarkable trend. Te Akau Racing have now claimed eight of the last nine editions of this race, a statistic that speaks less to dominance and more to sustained excellence in identifying and developing elite juveniles.

And the blueprint is familiar.

Time and again, David Ellis and his team have dipped into the Gold Coast sale and emerged with top-level performers. Names like Imperatriz, Princess Coup, Sword of State, and Campionessa all followed a similar path before making their mark at the highest level.

Seize The Day now looks ready to join that list.

A $600,000 purchase, the colt is by champion sire I Am Invincible and out of the prolific mare Zimaretto, whose record as a producer continues to strengthen. The pedigree is deep, the physical presence imposing, and now the race record is starting to match.

What comes next will define just how far he can go—but on this evidence, the ceiling looks high.

For now, though, one thing is clear: the Tangerine machine isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
