Baychimo stamped his authority on India’s premier mile Classic with a decisive victory in the Grade 1 Indian 2000 Guineas, run over 1600 meters on turf at Mumbai.
The three-year-old colt delivered a composed and professional performance secure a winner’s purse of ₹7.35 million (€70,000).
Ridden with confidence by A. Sandesh, Baychimo settled smoothly before asserting in the straight, proving too strong for Sovereign King, who finished second, while Namiri stayed on gamely to claim third. Oisin Murphy was unplaced on Zachariah.
Baychimo is bred to excel at the mile, being by French Navy (GB) out of Lady Sergeant (IND), a daughter of Phoenix Tower (USA). The pedigree blend of speed and balance was evident as he handled the Classic test with maturity beyond his age.
The colt is trained by Adhiraj S. Jodha and races in the colors of a powerful ownership group: Diamond Band Racing Syndicate Pvt Ltd, Mr Kersi H. Vachha, Bachhawat Farms Pvt Ltd (represented by Mr Vikram Bachhawat), and Dr Syed Ainuddin Arif, with Mr Shiven Surendranath representing the syndicate.
With this success, Baychimo now takes his place among recent elite winners of India’s most important Classic and firmly establishes himself as one of the standout three-year-olds of the season. The Indian Derby could be next on his agenda.
