Andrew Fortune’s much-anticipated comeback has yet to yield the expected results, with his rides struggling to make an impact. His return to the saddle included a heavy defeat on a 4/10 favorite, who finished over 11 lengths behind the winner.
The former South African champion jockey, who had to pay a significant fine to regain his license after a lengthy process with the NHA, took his first rides back at Turffontein on Saturday. Originally set to return on Friday at Greyville, his comeback was delayed when the meeting was called off due to wet conditions.
So far, Fortune has had three mounts, but none have delivered a top-three finish. His best result has been a distant fourth, despite two of his rides starting as favorites. However, unpredictable weather and testing conditions may have played a role in the unexpected results.
While the initial results have been disappointing, Fortune retains the backing of influential owners and stables. His upcoming rides will be closely watched to see if he can turn things around in the days ahead.
