Riding Fees in Britain to Increase by 3%

Effective February 1, the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has approved a 3% increase in riding fees, marking the first time the board has set the figure.

Key Changes

  • Flat jockeys’ fees will rise to £167.67 (up from £162.79).
  • Jump jockeys’ fees will increase to £227.92 (up from £221.28).
  • Non-runner fees: £83.84 for Flat jockeys and £113.96 for jump jockeys.

Negotiation Process

In November, negotiations between the Professional Jockeys Association (PJA) and the Racehorse Owners Association (ROA) took place:

  • The PJA sought a fee increase aligned with inflation (3.2%).
  • The ROA initially proposed a 2% increase.
  • The BHA independently determined the final figure this year, unlike last year, when it mediated a 3.1% increase.

Paul Struthers, CEO of the PJA, suggested that the BHA might set riding fees annually moving forward, eliminating direct negotiations.
