One Stripe Set for Breeders’ Cup Mile after Sale

One Stripe, the Cape-based star who captured the prestigious King’s Plate earlier this year, is gearing up for an international campaign with the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Del Mar firmly in his sights.

The horse has been sold, with Hollywood Racing acquiring a majority stake, while Rikesh Sewgoolam, his original owner, retains a minor share. According to sources, One Stripe is expected to travel overseas on the same shipment as other South African prospects, including Quid Pro Quo, as part of a growing trend of exporting top-class talent.

The renewed appetite for South African talent in the U.S. is reportedly driven by the success of Isivunguvungu and Beach Bomb, who have shown that South African-bred horses can compete at the highest level globally.

Sewgoolam has indicated that One Stripe has one additional domestic target before his American campaign—the Big Cap in March.

Both the winners of the King's Plate and the Paddock Stakes are invited to the American showpiece.

Meanwhile, the Breeders’ Cup continues to plan to expand its Challenge Race series, with new qualifying events expected to be announced next year. This development provides greater international accessibility to one of racing’s most prestigious events.
