'Tokyo Tom' Marquand Back with a Double

Tom Marquand made a triumphant return to British racing at Kempton Park after a successful winter campaign in Japan. Riding Coul Angel in the Unibet Supports Safer Gambling Novice Stakes, Marquand struck gold at 7-1, teaming up with trainer Mick Appleby, renowned for their victories with Big Evs. He quickly doubled up on William Haggas’ Purple Rainbow, the 5-6 favorite, securing a royal victory in the Free Bet With Unibet’s Betbuilder Rebound Maiden Fillies’ Stakes. These wins showcased Marquand’s enduring class as he transitioned seamlessly back into domestic action.

Marquand, who has spent three consecutive winters in Japan with his wife, fellow jockey Hollie Doyle, reflected on his most recent stint, where he rode 21 winners, including a Listed success. He was nicknamed 'Tokyo Tom' in Japan. Speaking to Racing TV, he praised the quality of horses he partnered with, emphasizing the strength of Japanese racing on the global stage. “It’s a privilege to ride such classy horses,” he said, acknowledging the intensity of Japan’s racing scene but appreciating the balance it offers compared to the grueling British circuit. He also noted how the experience sharpened his skills and broadened his opportunities internationally.

Looking ahead, Marquand hinted at a packed travel schedule, with potential rides in Dubai, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and possibly Australia. “The quality of rides I’ve been getting has improved significantly, and winning a Listed race on a Group-level horse in Japan was incredible,” he shared. With a busy season on the horizon and growing international acclaim, Marquand’s career trajectory continues to ascend, underlining his status as one of the most sought-after jockeys in the sport.
