Greaterix Triumphs in Gr3 Betway Got The Greenlight Stakes

The recent comeback of Muzi Yeni hits a note as he showed his trademark confidence aboard Greaterix, guiding the striking grey son of Vercingetorix to a polished victory in the Grade 3 Betway Got The Greenlight Stakes over 1400m at Turffontein on Saturday.

After a bold but ultimately taxing front-running effort in the Gr2 Dingaans in November on sumer Cup Day, Greaterix showed his true form and set the record straight on this 1400m race. He pulled up severely distressed post race in the Dingaans and was cooled off and sprayed for around 20mins after that tiring effort.

Greaterix was given two weeks off according to trainer Mike De Kock to recover and then returned to this effort on what his trainer described as needing the run. He hold off a spirited challenge from Fire Attack to score by 0.70 lengths in a time of 86.59 seconds after the second horse was well back and ran on in an eye catching display.

Greaterix was sent off as the 6/10 favorite after opening at 11/10, and his supporters had reason to cheer as he responded when Yeni asked for his effort late in the race. That was around 450m out when he cruised to the front looked a winner from there. Fire Attack, an 8/1 shot, ran on like steam train for second, while Cosmic Speed (15/2) stayed on well to finish third, 2.4 lengths behind the winner. The outsider Potberrie rounded off the quartet.

This victory marked Greaterix’s fourth career win from just six starts, taking his earnings to an impressive R556,875. Bred by Al Adiyaat South Africa (Pty) Ltd, the colt is owned by his breeders in partnership with prominent connections Mike de Kock, Chris Haynes, George Ragunan, and Noelene Malherbe who bought into him.
