Thorpedo Anna, representing Brookdale Racing, Mark Edwards, breeder Judy Hicks, and Magdalena Racing, capped an outstanding 2024 season with a decisive 2 ½-length victory over Raging Sea in the $2 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff (G1) at Del Mar. This race marked the 41st running of the prestigious event for fillies and mares.
Guided by trainer Kenny McPeek and jockey Brian Hernandez Jr., Thorpedo Anna covered the 1 1/8 miles on a fast track in 1:49.10. This win gave McPeek his first Breeders’ Cup victory and Hernandez his second, the first being the 2012 Classic aboard Fort Larned.
Breaking swiftly, Hernandez positioned Thorpedo Anna right on the lead, where she maintained a narrow advantage with Raging Sea pressing closely on her outside. Through fractions of :23.81, :47.99, and 1:12.01, Thorpedo Anna held her ground. As they entered the far turn, Raging Sea attempted to close the gap, but Thorpedo Anna powered forward once more, securing her sixth win in seven starts this year. Raging Sea held on for second, 3 ¼ lengths ahead of Candied in third.
The Distaff win added $1,040,000 to Thorpedo Anna’s earnings, bringing her career total to $3,843,663. This victory also marked her fifth Grade 1 win in 2024, with her only loss coming against males when she narrowly missed winning the Travers (G1) by a head to Fierceness.
Thorpedo Anna is a Kentucky-bred 3-year-old filly by Fast Anna out of Sataves, a mare by Uncle Mo.
