Cogburn confirms Status as Best Turf Sprinter in States

Cogburn, North America's leading grass sprinter, showcased his dominance on September 7 by winning the $1,797,200 Ainsworth Turf Sprint Stakes (G2T) at Kentucky Downs. This victory was particularly significant as it avenged his only loss on grass from 2023 at the same track. Ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr., Cogburn took the lead early in the six-furlong race and never relinquished control, finishing with a time of 1:07.68 and winning by 3 1/4 lengths under minimal pressure.

The race also saw British-trained Khaadem, winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, rally to secure second place. Axthelm finished third, just ahead of the 2023 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint winner, Nobals. While the victory earned Cogburn an automatic entry into the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar, he had already secured his spot by winning the Jaipur Stakes (G1T) at Saratoga in June, where he set a North American record for 5 1/2 furlongs.

Cogburn's success on the turf has been remarkable, especially considering his earlier career on dirt, where he won three of his eight starts. Bred by Bellary Bloodstock in Kentucky and purchased for $150,000 by Clark Brewster at the 2021 Ocala Breeders' Sale, Cogburn has now won nine of his 15 starts overall. A partnership with WinStar Farm was announced in July, securing his breeding rights upon retirement.

Steve Asmussen, Cogburn's trainer, expressed pride in the horse's consistent performance and the support from his ownership group. Not This Time, Cogburn's sire, continues to be one of North America's top young stallions, further solidifying Cogburn's value as a future stud.
