Richard Fourie, the 38 year old South African record breaking jockey in a racing nation that has been racing for well over 160 years set another mark in one of its oldest jurisdictions, the Eastern Cape.
On Friday afternoon, Fourie rode another three winners recording his 116th win of the season at Fairview - an astonishing feat for any one track anywhere in the world, especially with a limited program of events. This equals the current record for the province.
Fourie's stable alignment with Greeff has been the source of most of his winners and it was Grazinginthegrass, a son of Philanthropist, who gave Fourie the 116. The gelding notched up his 15th career victory, another feat in itself.
The previous record was held by Greg Cheyne, who like Fourie rode in places like Hong Kong during his career.
This was Fourie's 367th winner of the season with a remarkable 23.1% strike rate.
