Danielson Fine Reduced on Appeal

The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms that an Appeal was heard at its offices in Johannesburg on Monday, 3 June 2024 and finalized on Monday, 1 July 2024

Background

At an Inquiry held in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 27 March 2024, Jockey R Danielson was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 read with Guideline N on the use of the crop. The particulars being that, as the rider of KAKIEBOS, he misused his crop by striking this filly on the ear on a number of occasions during the running of Race 6 at the Vaal Racecourse on 7 March 2024.

Jockey Danielson pleaded guilty and was found guilty of the charge.

The Inquiry Board after considering the mitigating factors presented, ruled that Jockey Danielson be suspended from riding in races for a period of fourteen (14) days and a fine of R25.000 was imposed.

Jockey Danielson was given the Right of Appeal against the penalty imposed.

The Appeal Board, after having heard submissions put forward in this matter, both on behalf of the Appellant and on behalf of the Respondent, ruled that despite the seriousness of the offence, there were strong points of mitigation in Mr Danielson’s favour. Subsequently, it was decided to substitute the penalty and that Mr Danielson be suspended from riding in races for a period of seven days and be fined R15 000.

Mr Danielson’s Appeal fee was refunded.
