BELMONT TO RACE ON TAPETA FOR WINTER

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) announced plans to introduce a new all-weather Tapeta track at Belmont Park for winter racing starting in 2026. This decision is part of NYRA's broader efforts to enhance equine safety and improve racing opportunities throughout the year. The new track, expected to be completed by mid-2025, will replace the current dirt track during the winter months and is anticipated to provide a safer surface for horses.

NYRA President and CEO Dave O'Rourke emphasized that the move aligns with their vision to modernize facilities and ensure the sport's sustainability and growth. The decision follows extensive research and consultation, with data supporting the effectiveness of all-weather surfaces in reducing equine injuries.

In addition to the new Tapeta track, Belmont Park is undergoing other renovations, including updates to the main track and the addition of two new turf courses. These improvements aim to offer diverse and high-quality racing and training options year-round.

NYRA's proactive approach has been acknowledged by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority (HISA), which praised NYRA's commitment to horse safety. NYRA has also formed an All-Weather Surfaces Committee to further evaluate the impact and feasibility of all-weather tracks nationally.

Overall, NYRA's initiative underscores its dedication to advancing horse racing standards through modern facilities and practices, ensuring a sustainable future for the sport in New York.
