Golden Gates set to close this weekend

Golden Gate Fields will close its doors after Sunday’s program, marking the end of the winter-spring meeting. Initially set to shut down last December, the track's closure was postponed, allowing racing to continue through the winter-spring season.

Bay Area racing enthusiasts will now have to travel over 30 miles to Pleasanton to watch live racing, as Golden Gate Fields will no longer be available.

First opened in 1941 and consistently operating since 1947, Golden Gate Fields has been the heart of Bay Area racing since Bay Meadows closed. Located next to the San Francisco Bay, the track's parking lot offers stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, downtown San Francisco, and Alcatraz Island in the distance.

Golden Gates closure is a say reality of racing these days. Arlington Park was closed recently and Singapore is set for closure later this year. Macau has already closed. Many are to follow as racing as a sport struggles to stay relevant.
