Rebel's Romance makes Hong Kong History

Rebel’s Romance, hailed as a “real international superstar” by jockey William Buick, secured a decisive victory in the G1 Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2400m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. Competing against seven top Hong Kong stayers, Rebel’s Romance triumphed by two lengths over Tony Cruz-trained Five G Patch and La City Blanche, marking Charlie Appleby’s first Hong Kong win and the first for an internationally trained horse in this event.

Owned by Godolphin, Rebel’s Romance showcased his travel and racing prowess by adding this victory to his impressive record, which includes wins in Germany, the United States, and the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic in March. Buick praised the team’s efforts, noting the horse’s readiness and impressive performance.

Buick strategically placed Rebel’s Romance behind the leader, Moments In Time, allowing the Dubawi gelding to find his rhythm before making his move as the race intensified. Despite early pressure, Rebel’s Romance responded well, demonstrating his versatility and strong finishing ability.

Rebel’s Romance clocked 2m 25.62s for the race. Appleby expressed delight for Godolphin and hinted at future plans for the horse, including a potential run in the G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Vase (2400m) in December after a trip to the United States.

Meanwhile, dual winner Russian Emperor, trained by Douglas Whyte, finished seventh and may be retired following discussions with the owner. Jockey Hugh Bowman reported a strong early pace that didn’t favor Russian Emperor.

On the undercard, Zac Purton dominated with four wins, including victories on Smart Beauty, Divano, Bottomuptogether, and Call Me Glorious. Purton's success was mirrored by Francis Lui, who secured a double to match Pierre Ng's season tally of 59 wins.

Additionally, Thunder Blink continued his unbeaten streak for Jimmy Ting, and Ting also celebrated a win with Huge Wave. Jerry Chau and Alexis Badel also contributed to the day’s excitement with impressive performances, while Andrea Atzeni and Matthew Chadwick capped off the event with notable wins.
