Seize the Grey Outpaces Mystik Dan in Preakness Stakes

Seize the Grey seized his opportunity on May 18 in the $2 million Preakness Stakes (G1) at Pimlico Race Course. Under the guidance of young jockey Jaime Torres, he took an early lead and held off Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Mystik Dan in the second jewel of the Triple Crown.

Owned by MyRacehorse, Seize the Grey delivered 88-year-old trainer D. Wayne Lukas his seventh Preakness win, further cementing the Hall of Famer's legendary career.

The 3-year-old gray or roan colt, son of the late Arrogate, covered the 1 3/16 miles on a muddy track in 1:56.82. Fresh off a victory in the Pat Day Mile Stakes (G2) on Kentucky Derby day at Churchill Downs, he paid $21.60 to win.

Mystik Dan, who was fourth early on, challenged Seize the Grey in the stretch but couldn't close the gap, finishing second. He did manage to edge out Catching Freedom in a tight photo for place.

Tuscan Gold finished fourth, just behind Catching Freedom. Lukas' other entry, Just Steel, came in fifth.

Bred in Kentucky by Jamm, Seize the Grey is out of the Smart Strike mare Smart Shopping. He was purchased by MyRacehorse for $300,000 from Mill Ridge Sales at the 2022 The Saratoga Sale, Fasig-Tipton's selected yearling sale.
