Striker Strydom Delves into Met Ride Disappointment

Piere Strydom delves into the intricacies of his Met Ride aboard See It Again, unraveling the complexity of a race that didn't unfold as anticipated. The seasoned jockey, who contemplated retirement before the opportunity to ride the esteemed horse arose, considers the July second race as a pinnacle moment in his career.

In an interview with SAHorseracing.COM, Strydom navigating through the race dynamics and  candidly acknowledges the inherent uncertainties in horse racing. Despite being aboard a horse with formidable odds (4/10 shot), See It Again faced a surprising defeat on World Pool day at Kenilworth, prompting Strydom to reflect on the unpredictable nature of the sport.

"I've experienced many days where I anticipated a great performance, only to see the horses fall short," shares Strydom. "In racing, there are ups and downs, and even with horses that seem unbeatable, there are no certainties. It's a race, and the horse must deliver on the day."

Analyzing the Met Ride, Strydom provides insights into his strategic decisions. "I would have liked to have been a bit handier. My instructions were to give the horse a chance. I found a bit of trouble at the back. I tried to get closer but then I'd all these horses in front of me and made an earlier move than I would have liked but in saying that the winner was behind me and he finished his race off well. Before I hit the straight I was trouble."

Drawing parallels with See It Again's previous race in the King's Plate, Strydom notes a noticeable absence of acceleration. "He felt reminiscent of his last race. Normally, he exhibits acceleration, but this time it wasn't there. He didn't quicken up at all. It was not the usual performance from him."

Despite the disappointment, Strydom remains resilient, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of racing. Looking forward, he expresses optimism about the upcoming 'The Championships' season in Joburg, hinting at potential rides that are yet to be confirmed.

Piere Strydom's stature as one of South Africa's greatest riders, holding the record for the winning-most rider in South African history, underscores the challenges and triumphs inherent in the world of horse racing. Internationally acclaimed as a rider of world-class caliber, Strydom's reflections offer a nuanced perspective on the highs and lows that define the sport.
