Watch: Jockey banned for a year for not riding out

Jockey Mark Ewe's one-year disqualification stems from his questionable handling of ROYAL FLUSH during a Selangor race on September 24. The Stewards, following an inquiry and testimonies from Ewe and Trainer HY Cheng, applied MRA Rule 44(8). This ruling was due to Ewe's alleged failure to employ all reasonable and permissible measures to ensure ROYAL FLUSH had a genuine opportunity to win or secure the best possible placing in the Class 5 A handicap over 1175m.

The crux of the matter was Ewe's purported failure to ride ROYAL FLUSH out in the straight from the 200M mark, resulting in a neck runner-up finish to Zilfikar. Notably, this isn't Ewe's inaugural encounter with such disciplinary action. The champion apprentice at Kranji from 2008 to 2010, Ewe had previously faced a one-year disqualification in 2012 for his management of Abyss in a Class 5 race.

The effective period of Ewe's recent disqualification spans from September 29, 2023, to September 28, 2024, inclusive. Alongside this suspension, he is also levied with a RM50,000 fine. This recurrence of disqualification underscores the significance of maintaining rigorous standards in jockeying, with the authorities keen on ensuring fair play and adherence to racing regulations.
