Del Mar's Pacific Classic set to Thrill

The upcoming Gr1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar promises an exciting showdown, reminiscent of Flightline's remarkable performance last year, which earned the highest rating of 2022.

While Flightline won't grace this race, it's attracted a field of noteworthy contenders. Geaux Rocket Ride, the surprise Gr1 Haskell winner at Monmouth Park, leads the charge with an impressive 3 out of 4 wins, including a victory over Mage, the Kentucky Derby champion. Sired by the distinguished Argentine stallion Candy Ride, Geaux Rocket Ride adds allure to the competition.

Defunded, another standout, boasts multiple Gr1 victories of his own, ensuring a competitive edge. The Pacific Classic tradition of featuring a son of Uncle Mo continues with Arabian Night, a USD 2.3 million yearling with two wins in three races and ongoing potential. However, he must overcome his previous encounter with Geaux Rocket Ride in the Haskell.

Skinner, a son of Curlin, joins the race, showing promise despite not yet reaching the heights expected of his USD 510,000 purchase price. With a Grade 1 placement before breaking his maiden, Skinner commands respect, coming within half a length of victory at the Santa Anita Derby.

This event promises a thrilling display of American racing at its finest, and for South African viewers, the legendary Trevor Denman will provide the familiar voice in the commentary box.
