Gilbert Rousset, one of the all time training great of Mauritius, passed away on Wednesday morning.
His achievements are historical in the sport of horseracing in Mauritius and his loss will be felt by thr broader horseracing community.
According to the Mauritius Turf Club, Gilbert Rousset holds the record for the number of wins by a trainer at Champ de Mars. Added to the fact that he has won plenty of classic races and Championships, it is safe to say that this veteran trainer has been very successful.
Under his tutelage, Great Gusto (1987), Mr Brock (2008), Disa Leader (2010) and Patrol Officer (2020) have all been crowned Champion horse, while Intercontinental won the 2013 Maiden Cup, after debuting his career in the lower categories.
2020 was a season full of success. Not only was he crowned Champion trainer, but he also trained the champion horse - Patrol Officer, and the co-winners of the Four-Year old Championship - Rule The Night and Alyaasaat.
