After a recent move to Australia from South Africa, Jockey Jeff Lloyd is
moving again. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Licensing Committee agreed to grant,
subject to the usual formalities, a Club Jockey's Licence to Jeffrey Lloyd for
the period 16 March 2009 until the conclusion of the current 2008/2009 racing
season.
Australian-based South African Jockey Jeffrey Lloyd, 47 years of age, has
been a jockey for 32 years, riding with considerable success in his native South
Africa as well as in Singapore (14 winners), Germany, Mauritius (5 Jockeys
Championships), England (7 winners), Macau and more recently in Australia where
he is currently domiciled. He also rode in Hong Kong during the 1993/1994 racing
season, at which time he rode 9 winners from 81 race rides (winning percentage
11.1 %). Jockey Lloyd is able to ride at the minimum weight of 113 lbs.
In South Africa, Jockey Lloyd rode in excess of 4100 winners, 87 of which
were at Group 1 level, including the winners of 5 renewals of the J&B
Metropolitan Handicap, The Fillies Guineas (5 occasions), The Queens Plate (4
occasions), The Computaform Sprint (4 occasions) and The SA Classic (twice).
After winning the South African Apprentice Jockey's Championship on 3 occasions
(1978-1980), he won 6 senior Jockeys Championships, on one occasion breaking
Michael Roberts' record for the most number of winners in one season with 313
winners. During his last full season of riding in South Africa (2006/2007), he
won 12 Group 1 winners and in January 2007 rode 6 winners at one meeting
including 3 Group one races (J&B Metropolitan Handicap on POCKET POWER, The
Fillies Classic on SUN CLASSIQUE and The Cape Derby on JAY PEG).
Since relocating to Australia, Jockey Lloyd has ridden in excess of 100
winners, including NOM DU JEU in the 2008 AJC Australian Derby (Group 1),
HURRIED CHOICE (AJC Challenge Stakes and Theo Marks Handicap at Group 2 level),
GALLANT TESS (Breeders' Classic and Chelmsford Stakes at Group 2 level), ALL
SILENT (Group 2 Ajax Stakes) and STRIPPER (Group 3 AJC Sweet Embrace Stakes).
At the Rosehill Gardens race meeting on 31 January 2009, Jockey Lloyd was
dislodged from his mount in the Parade Ring and injured his right foot. He has
not ridden since that date. Accordingly, it will be necessary for Jockey Lloyd
to satisfactorily undertake a mandatory medical examination prior to commencing
riding track work in Hong Kong.
