Frances Ethel, See It Again head Summer Cup Entries

42 horses were entered for the highly anticipated R6 million Betway Summer Cup, set to be contested over 2000m at Turffontein on Saturday, 30 November.

Among the standout entries is the country's top rated horse over the distance See It Again, trained by Michael Roberts. This accomplished five-year-old son of Twice Over, a winner of two Grade 1 races, was recently gelded, and it has been confirmed that his next big challenge will be this prestigious Grade 1 event - the richest race in Africa.

Brett Crawford, via son James based in Johannesburg, has two classy nominations including SA Oaks winner Frances Ethel and 2023 Durban July winner, Winchester Mansion. Frances Ethel is returning from a virus which set her back and she subsequently missed the Durban July. Both race this weekend at Turffontein in a stacked Pinnacle Plate over the mile. Frances Ethel, owned by Team Valor, has grown into a beautiful specimen and now stands at 16hh 2inches. Her comeback is much anticipated.

Mike de Kock, a dominant force in South African racing, has entered seven runners. His star nomination includes Equus Horse-of-the-Year Dave The King. Although the Grade 1 Champions Cup winner is on the list, De Kock hinted that other plans might be in store for the gelding, so his final participation remains uncertain.

Also among the entries is last year’s Betway Summer Cup winner Royal Victory, who later added the Grade 1 Premier’s Champions Challenge to his accomplishments over the same track and distance.

The second entry deadline is set for 11:00 on Tuesday, 5 November, while final entries are due by 09:00 on Monday, 18 November 2024, after which the weights will be announced.

Declarations must be submitted by 11:00 on Wednesday, 20 November, and the final field, along with the barrier draws, will be revealed during an event.

Additionally, from 15 October 2024, the Operator, in consultation with NHA Handicappers, will release a series of logs to track the standings leading up to the race.
