Arundel's July Dream

When the number 1 draw was revealed at the Durban July draw function, the Royal Victory table erupted in ecstatic celebration. The joyful shouts from the owners were the most passionate of the entire afternoon.

Sandy and Eugene Arundel, dedicated supporters of South African horse racing, now hold a ticket to the prestigious Durban July, the pinnacle of the sport in the country.

"I am a firm believer in lucky numbers," said Sandy, an MBA graduate, who, along with Eugene, has spent a lifetime in the world of computers and statistics, now stepping into semi-retirement having founded ITSSA Business solutions.

"Pick the one in the center," Sandy urged fellow owner Peter Victor, who drew the coveted number 1 for Royal Victory. This decision came after a tense period of deliberation.

"I was getting anxious with high numbers on both sides," Sandy confessed. The relief was palpable when Royal Victory drew number 1.

"I looked at him (Victor) and said, 'take the one in the center,'" Sandy recounted, describing the decisive moment. The Arundels recently acquired their share in the horse, joining a group of equally passionate owners.

"I took over Nathan's (Kotzen) share not too long ago," Sandy explained.

Alongside the Arundels, Peter and Belinda Victor, as well as Brandon Wiese and Natasha Sturdy, are also involved with Royal Victory. Royal Victory is going for a unique treble after winning both the Summer Cup and Premiers' Champions Challenge.

"Each person here has their own unique story. It would be amazing to see the horse win for them," said Sandy.

"They love this horse like a child. Their passion is truly touching." Sandy continued.

Recalling how they became involved, Sandy said, "I have horses with Glen, Nathan's brother. I visited Nathan's stable, and one thing led to another. Here we are."

Royal Victory is one of 18 competing for South African racing's ultimate prize.
